a story

The rain had washed away most of the dirt on the streets and her pace was slow as ever. She loved to walk on those streets at night, coming back from work, from staring at the computer all day, the lights at the Café were warm and soft, enough to lure her sight. She could have walked on but in a haste the choice was made and her pace changed she had a destination now. She walked in, her clothes were soaked still but the familiar faces made it all much warm, she left her umbrella in the same place as she always did the young man at the counter offered the cold brown bottle, she picked it up, paid the two dollars and walked through to the main room. The brown bottles were raised as soon as she came in, an unspoken code for the usual suspects that were seen at the café, she looked around looking for a seat, the Friday jam session had already started.

The general roar filled the room, the intricate sound of the guitar so powerful as to soothe the crowded room, and soon enough more voices joined the performer. She looked down as if to fix her dress but it was truly to disguise the flood of tears in her eyes and to get some peace of mind “just for tonight, a little peace of mind for tonight”, she looked up and he was staring at her as if he were waiting for a greeting. She smiled back and looked away, she swallowed her heart back into place with the cold beer, it burnt all the way down to her empty stomach.

The song was there, out for the world to hear, “if only I would’ve skip the sudden impulse I would be home now, not here! Not with him!” She stared at him in a haste disguising her curiosity with another drink from the brown bottle. “fate, it is him I know it, at what moment I lost him?, I don’t know, the oracle said it was him… but I’ve lost him forever”. The words from the oracle came to her ear as the soft sounds of the song slid from the fingers of the guitarist into her heart “and he will not let you go” At that moment she had fallen for him, without even knowing his name, just the sketch drawn by her words, the traits the oracle had pointed but those words were enough for her. She, that had had nothing in her life, not a thing of her own. Love had been until that moment the elusive dream that hid behind her smile, she was now as close as she could be but still so far away from him.

The thought of having someone had haunted her but now she knew she could’ve had, at what moment had she lost him?, she did not knew, “maybe it could have been in a night like this, a night when I chose otherwise… I made the choice, we made the choice to part from each other…it is done” Was it the time that she came, or the one time that she didn’t?… It was too late to know and to difficult to fathom her fate by now, the plane ticket was in her wallet and this was her last night on the Island, she was leaving in the morning. The crowd began to disappear, all the familiar faces faded with the pace of the night, leaving her the best wishes and the good byes she had heard before, he left giving her nothing but a smile, she stayed until the last song and she went home. The bags were packed, her destiny was sealed. The did not slept that night, she laid in bed and stared at the room that had been her home for all this time and said her good byes to every corner of her beloved chamber. All the possibilities of the fate she was building and the graveyard of the choices she never took, but that was behind now, as the plane raised through the bluest sky and the cotton blanket that the gods had laid that morning she left those graves in the ground.
